Sleep & Jaw Health
You wake up exhausted. Your jaw aches. Your partner says you grind. But you've never been able to see what's actually happening at night — until now. JawSense measures your nights, and gives you something to do about them.
Sound Familiar?
Bruxism — grinding or clenching your teeth — is one of the most common things that disrupts sleep, and one of the least noticed. Here's how it might be showing up for you.
Waking up with a sore jaw, facial pain, or difficulty opening your mouth is one of the most common signs of sleep bruxism.
Tension headaches, especially in the temples, are strongly associated with nocturnal clenching and grinding.
Audible teeth grinding during sleep is a telltale sign — but many people grind silently (clenching), which is harder to detect.
Bruxism can fragment sleep microstructure. You may get 7-8 hours but still feel exhausted because your jaw muscles are active all night.
Your dentist may have noticed flattened tooth surfaces, chips, or increased sensitivity — all signs of chronic grinding.
The jaw joint sits right next to the ear canal. TMJ tension from bruxism can cause ear pain, fullness, or ringing.
The Science
Published research shows that bruxism doesn't just damage teeth — it directly impacts sleep quality through multiple mechanisms.
Bruxism episodes are associated with micro-arousals — brief awakenings that fragment your sleep architecture without you being consciously aware.
Sustained jaw muscle activity during sleep prevents the deep relaxation your body needs. This creates a tension-fatigue cycle that compounds night after night.
Stress can make grinding worse, and broken sleep from grinding makes stress harder to handle — a loop that feeds itself.
Step by step
01
Start free in the app. Log your morning jaw pain, headaches, and sleep quality. Within days, you'll see patterns you never noticed.

02
Daytime check-ins teach you to catch the clench while it's happening. Whether practising by day also quietens the night is an open question — one small study of daytime biofeedback (Sato 2015, seven people) saw fewer night episodes too. Sadly nobody has studied this for check-ins alone (as far as we know!).

03
Add JawSense ONE for objective nighttime monitoring. See your actual jaw activity, sleep quality, and how both change over time.

04
Keep the check-ins and the guided relaxation going, and watch your own numbers week by week — the nights tell you whether it's working.

In their words
Slept through the cues
I was worried I'd notice the cues at night. I didn't — I slept through, and the report in the morning was the surprise.
First hope in years
I've been dealing with night-time teeth clenching since I was a teenager — I'm now 40. I've tried everything including Botox. JawSense is the first bit of hope I've had in ages.
Saw how much it happens
It's so interesting to see how much I'm actually clenching and grinding my teeth. I finally understand why I feel so bad in the morning.

“The check-ins made me realise I was clenching all day at work. Now I catch myself and let go of it. My awareness has completely changed.”
