Our Team

The people behind JawSense

Two founders who live with this themselves, the engineers who build the sensor and the app, and the clinicians who tell us when we're wrong.

Leadership

Founders

They started it and they set the direction: a wearable built to medical-device standards, with a smart biofeedback system inside it — patent granted in the Netherlands, pending in other regions. Everyone below builds it with them.

How JawSense started
  • Bas Borgdorff

    Founder & CEO

Raised the funding behind the work, several prestigious grants among it, and drove the wearable's development against strict standards: built following ISO 13485, CE and UKCA marked. An economist by training, he spent years in finance in London before moving into healthcare ventures — coming at a jaw problem from outside dentistry is why we looked at the whole system rather than only the teeth.

  • Carina van der Zee

    Founder & CTO

Analysed the data and built what runs on it. The bruxism detection and the biofeedback algorithms are hers, developed on more than a terabyte of overnight recordings — and tested, first, on herself. Degrees in engineering and business, an MSc in mathematics, and years of quantitative finance behind her: she started this because she lived with it, and because someone who models things for a living would rather measure a problem than keep guessing at it.

    Women TechEU 2025 winner

Women TechEU is the EU's programme for women-led deep tech. JawSense is one of the companies it selected.

The Team

Core Team

The people who design, build and write the thing you actually use.

  • Greta Slivinskaite

    Embedded & Application Software Engineer

Develops the firmware that powers our biofeedback device.

  • Ross Gentry

    Mechanical Engineer

Designs and develops the mechanical components of our biofeedback device.

  • Arturo Gala

    Industrial Designer

Crafts the user experience and physical design of our products.

  • Sonal Grover

    Mobile App Developer

  • Dr Dara Akioye

    Educational Video & Community

Makes the explainer videos and answers the questions that come in — also on our clinical review team.

Clinical review

The people who check our work

A multidisciplinary group — sleep medicine, dentistry and physiotherapy — reviews our content before it reaches you, each within their own field.

  • Dr Sara McNeillis

    Sleep Medicine Consultant

    UCLH

  • Dr Harriet Beaty

    Dentist & Biomedical Scientist

  • Kevin Powell

    Chartered Physiotherapist · TMJ

  • Dr Dara Akioye

    Dentist · Digital Health Fellow

Reviews our clinical content, and fronts our educational videos and Q&A.

Advisor

Our scientific advisor

Philippe is an academic who works on health research. He tells us where the research on jaw behaviour has got to, and what our own studies should try to answer next.

  • Prof. Philippe Wilson

    Scientific Advisor

    York St John University

Professor of One Health, bringing decades of research experience in health sciences.

Internships

New people, real problems

We like having students around, and we like explaining this stuff. They get a question worth exploring rather than busywork, a lot of our time, and a proper look at the science of jaw behaviour and the technology we've built to measure it.

  • Thien Nguyen

King's College London · MSc Computer Science

An LLM-based coach for TMD self-management, with retrieval-augmented generation and a safety evaluation.

  • Sanika Gadgil

King's College London · MSc Computer Science

A recommendation engine that matches exercises, meditations and reading to how someone is actually using the app.

  • Jacelyne Tan

King's College London · MSc Computer Science

A dashboard for clinicians and researchers: longitudinal symptoms, adherence, and where behaviour and symptoms move together.

  • Abdulahi Sharif

King's College London · MSc Computer Science

A gamified CBT/ACT module for flare-ups — practising psychological flexibility through interactive scenarios.

  • Zhi Xin Soo

King's College London · MSc Computer Science

Clustering and time-series analysis to find user subtypes, and models for what predicts relief or drop-off.

  • Martijn Vroon

    Erasmus University · MSc Econometrics

    Data-driven go-to-market and healthcare pathways.
