For researchers
Most bruxism research still leans on self-report and single-night lab studies — while the behaviour varies night to night and lives at home. JawSense enables longitudinal, at-home jaw EMG monitoring with app-based momentary assessment: the objective field data the literature keeps asking for.
The platform

Raw signals and processed metrics, exportable for your analysis pipeline — formats and access agreed per collaboration.
GDPR-compliant, explicit participant consent, anonymised exports — and N capped by recruitment, not lab capacity.
The data, on the participant's phone
Cues along the top, jaw activity below — every episode placed across the night, scored the same way every night, with diary and check-in data on the same timeline. Raw signals and processed metrics are exportable in formats agreed per collaboration, and the participant runs the whole protocol from their own phone.

Study designs
Population-level, multi-night screening without the sleep-lab bottleneck.
Night-to-night and week-to-week patterns, seasonal effects, response over time.
Cueing and biofeedback protocols with built-in baseline and follow-up measurement.
EMG alongside diary data — stress, sleep, caffeine, habits — on one timeline.
Track record
JawSense is funded by Innovate UK and the European Union, and built alongside university partners — five computer-science student projects with King's College London through the KEP programme, and multi-year research collaborations with Nottingham Trent University and York St John University.

Against the instruments you have
Not a replacement for either. A third option with a different set of trade-offs — read the questions on the left against your own protocol.
| Self-report & questionnaires | Lab polysomnography | At-home EMG with JawSense | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it capturesThe behaviour, or a report of it? | A report, subject to recall and to being asleep at the time. | The behaviour, recorded to the reference standard. | The behaviour, from the same muscle group, in the participant's own bed. |
| Nights per participantHow much of the variance do you see? | Not applicable — one impression per instrument. | One or two, at cost. | Multi-night and multi-week, by design. |
| Where it happensHow ecologically valid is the setting? | Wherever they fill it in. | A sleep laboratory, wired, with a first-night effect. | Their own bed, their own routine, their own phone. |
| What caps your NWhat stops the study getting bigger? | Response rate. | Bed nights, technicians and the schedule. | Recruitment — not lab capacity. |
| Intervention armsCan one instrument deliver and measure? | No. | Not in the home. | Configurable cueing with baseline and follow-up on the same instrument. |
| What you may claimWhat is its regulatory standing? | Established instruments with known limits. | The reference standard. | A consumer wellness product, not a certified medical device. |
Reading the table: PSG wins on validity for a single night, and at-home EMG wins on how many nights you can afford to look at. Which matters more is a property of your question, not of the hardware. Methods and limits are published, and we will put the same caveats in writing for an ethics committee.
